"Dear Hiring Manager”... And 5 Other Tragic Mistakes

Apr 08, 2025

When they were little…

 …they wanted to be a ballerina 🩰

 An astronaut 🚀

 A firefighter 🔥

 A rockstar 🎸

You know what was never on the list?

 “Whom It May Concern” 😑

Yeah… nobody ever dreamed of growing up to be that.

So why are you calling them that?

Here are six salutations you should never slap at the top of your email, cover letter, or LinkedIn message:

Dear Hiring Manager

Dear Member of the Committee

To Whom It May Concern

Dear Sir or Madam

Dear Recruiter

Dear Mr. or Ms. [Last Name]

Instead? Try being human.

 Use their first name:

 👉 Dear Bob,

And if you don’t know it?

It’s totally fine to use the company name:

👉 Dear Nike,

No stiff formality.

No weird assumptions.

Just a simple, respectful greeting that actually sounds like you.

Trust me — that one line at the top?

It sets the tone for everything that follows.
