“I’D SAY, IN A GIVEN WEEK, I PROBABLY ONLY DO ABOUT 15 MINUTES OF REAL, ACTUAL WORK.”
– Peter Gibbons
GREAT ORGANIZATIONS RELY ON SEASONED PROFESSIONALS THAT HAVE SEEN AND KNOW A LOT.
Deep knowledge and experience is absolutely vital…and it can also be a huge problem.
Because knowing is the enemy of learning.
When one has been doing something a certain way for a long time and KNOWS all about it, there’s a risk that learning, innovation, creativity - even willingness to fail gets SHUT DOWN.
The result is an equilibrium where professionals within an organization get just good enough to be proficient and once that happens, learning pretty much stops.
Â
Many organizations operate on the premise that people get perpetually better at doing things by just continuing to do those things. However, past a certain level of proficiency, this isn’t what happens. Research shows that in order for performance to improve past the basics in any arena, especially at an elite level, four components of deliberate practice are necessary:
Unraveling how these dynamics impact leadership, change, learning, and culture is one of the ways coaching can dramatically elevate organizational performance and results.
The people in your organization aren’t “resources” or “talent” or “assets” - they are miracles. They aren’t designed to be “acquired” or “handled” or “managed;” they’re designed to be inspired. They need leadership.Â
If you spend lots of time and energy on individuals, teams, or units within your organization that constantly seem like weak links, I have some bad news for you: there’s a good chance those “weak links” aren’t lazy, stupid, or disorganized. There’s a good chance the problem isn’t that they lack the right skills. What they lack is inspiration and what they need is stronger leadership within the organization, their team, and most importantly: themselves.
Weak leadership is scary because it fuels ambiguity, an absence of safety, lack of trust, bad communication, broken agreements, lack of recognition, getting judged, weak boundaries, and limited opportunities to grow. It is some TOXIC AND CORROSIVEÂ #@$%@#.
Most organizations invest SO much to hire people, pay people, give them benefits, raise productivity, decrease turnover, find efficiency, cut costs…and then wonder why they don’t see big results. Of course, the reason they don’t see big results is because all of those investments rely on the premise that people need to be managed and motivated by extrinsic rewards.
The powerful alternative: understanding that high performance becomes quantum when people experience greater ability to lead themselves, and that their value is unleashed not by what they do but by who they are.Â
Â
EMPOWERING PEOPLE TO BE STRONGER LEADERS FOR THEMSELVES, THEIR TEAMS, AND THEIR ORGANIZATION IS EXACTLY WHAT COACHING DOES.
It’s the reason why coaching is by far one of the best investments any organization can make to better serve its clients, customers, members, students, shareholders, constituents, or whatever mission it exists to advance.
