Game Face

May 28, 2024

It's that time of year when, after a lot of hard work, many bright and shiny students are graduating from school.🎓 Inevitably, this is also the time of year when some will start talking about the importance of "following your passion" at work.

That would be great advice, if it was helpful. Because the idea of "following your passion" at work is kind of overrated...🤷

RIB SPREADER

If you went in for heart surgery and the heart surgeon giddly explained...

"I just LOVE the heart❤️! There's blood and colors and it's magical! I'm so passionate about the heart!" You'd get the hell out of there.

On the other hand, if the heart surgeon steadily explained...

"We're gonna cut you open 🔪 and fix your heart ❤️‍🩹. If things go great, that'll be good. If things go sideways, we'll handle it." You'd be good to go because that surgeon would be showing you that she had her GAME FACE on.

ZEN

True professionals in action are actually pretty neutral and dispassionate.

If things go great, they're good. If things go bad, they're good.🧐 Real professionals create and rely on structures and systems to make sure work gets done no matter what. Regardless of how they feel in the particular moment, professionals deliver.

EARLOBES👂

"But Eric! If I'm not passionate about my work, won't I be forever unfulfilled and eternally UNHAPPY?!?"

NO.

Because there's something way more powerful than a career guided by passion, and that is a career guided by service. Not just a little bit of service; A LOT of service.

Get SUPER excellent at offering the world something it REALLY needs through your work and you'll have fulfillment and happiness coming out your earlobes.
