Go Fish

Sometimes I hear a job-seeker say something like, "I'm really picky about where I apply!"

 

And, I'm always like, "what's your thinking on THAT?!"

 

Because....being super picky about where one applies, networks, or otherwise does outreach in a job search is a lot like hesitating to put a fishing line in the water because you're worried about what kind of fish you might catch.

 

The opportunity with both job-hunting and fishing: you don't need to worry about what you'll catch unless/until you catch it. Only if/when you get an offer do you need to worry about whether you're going to keep it or throw it back. 

 

If there's a place where you absolutely don't want to fish...sure....don't fish there. However there are lots of lakes and rivers and streams and, you know, a FREAKING OCEAN of opportunities out there. Don't limit yourself in a job search by limiting how many lines you cast.
