I'm Kind of a Big Deal
Oct 15, 2024"There is nothing more insulting to a great salesman than having to listen to a bad salesman." - Michael Scott
Some think they'll be more influential if they seem super important. Big mistake. π« Recently, I was reminded of this in three ways:
No, We're Auditioning YOU π
Last week, I met Rich: super dynamic, interesting guy—highly accomplished. π He's got a bright future ahead of him. Rich described how he had recently talked to another coach that required him to "audition" before that coach would consider working with him. WHAT?!? π²
Have there been times where a potential client and I mutually agreed that we weren't a good fit? Lots. However, an audition?! Ick. π¬
Big Certification π
This weekend, I received a coaching certification I've been working towards for a long time. Not very many people have attained this certification, and it's something I'm super proud of. π
Is it something I'll raise as a reason for people to work with me? Nope. Is it something that will cause more people to want to work with me? I doubt it. π€·βοΈ
No No, I'M Busier! β³
A few days ago, I received a call from somebody interested in selling something that I'm actually kind of interested in. As soon as I realized who they were, I apologized and explained that we might need to reschedule a time to talk because they'd caught me between two things and I only had about 5 minutes. β°
They then proceeded to tell me that they only had 3 minutes and they needed to get to something, too.
Huh? Didn't they just call me? Why would they call if they only had 3 minutes? π€
I immediately understood that they were working to make themselves seem BUSIER (and therefore more important?) than me. It was a status thing. Even though I pointed out what they were doing right on the call, they still didn't break character. Slimy. π€’
Puffy Shirts π
There's only one reason somebody will ever hire you, buy from you, date you, do business with you, or really want to spend much time with you at all. It's not how important or famous you are. It's that they trust you. π€
If you want to be a real VIP, give others an FYI that that any time/energy you might have spent on seeming important has been 100% reallocated to serving the world. π
Glad to be ordinary with you today, Eric βοΈ
