In the boxing ring - there aren't a lot of formalities. Maybe a few to make sure one boxer doesn't wind up actually killing the other. And not a ton of formalities. The idea is to KNOCK. THE. OTHER. GUY. OUT.ย ๐Ÿ’ฅ

Ever wonder where the expression "mind your Ps and Qs" comes from?

We don't actually know, and there are a few theories.

๐Ÿ–Š๏ธIt might come from old metal typography, where it was easy to mix up lowercase p's and q's when setting out type.

๐ŸบIt might come from early pubs where bartenders kept track of how much a patron was drinking by marking down "p's" for pints and "q's" for quarts.

๐Ÿ’ญIt might be an abbreviation short for "(p) pleases" and "thank (q)yous."

Whatever the case, p's and q'sโ€”and formality in generalโ€”are meant to help people get along. โœจ

A big reason diplomats and militaries pay attention to protocol is because it offers a way to show respect to potential adversaries in the hope of avoiding war.

Formality can be a way to mark important occasions, an excuse to dress up for fancy parties๐ŸŽ‰ , and a reminder that we're civilized and use cutlery. ๐Ÿด

And on a daily basis in the working world, formality can have an inverse relationship to trust.

Imposing formality can convey less trust. After all, why would we need all that formality if there's lots of trust?

Relaxing formality can convey more trust. We have trust, so we don't need formality.
