What To Do When Your Experience Isnβt Landing
Jun 27, 2025
“They don't get me.”
I hear this a lot from job seekers...
...with serious experience.
You’ve done the work.
You’ve built real results πΌ.
And yet... your message doesn’t seem to land.
Recruiters don’t get it π
.
Hiring managers never see it π.
You start to wonder:
Is it me?
Is my story broken?
Here are 3 things to do when your experience isn’t landing: π
π 1. Stop making it about you.
You’re not hired because of your story.
You’re hired because you understand theirs
So stop explaining yourself π£οΈ.
Start understanding them.
What are they trying to solve?
What do they need to feel seen and supported?
Start there.
Once they feel understood —
then bring in your experience as a solution, not a monologue.
π― 2. Tailor your message to the right audience.
That 25-year-old recruiter may not speak your language.
They’re scanning for keywords — not deep expertise.
And the hiring manager behind the curtain?
They might get you immediately π‘.
So don’t write for everyone.
Write for the right someone.
Skip the buzzwords π«.
Speak directly to the person who needs what you do.
3. Think moments, not movies.
You don’t want one perfect, cohesive career narrative ποΈ.
You want clear, relevant examples that solve today’s problem.
Instead of polishing a single story…
focus on surfacing the right moment for the right context.
Don’t tell them who you’ve been.
Show them what you can do for them π₯.
TL;DR
If your experience isn’t landing, don’t shout louder.
Shift the spotlight π¦.
Show them you get them.
Then show them how you help.
