Galaga

Feb 07, 2023

In my youth when my family returned stateside every couple of summers, I aways spent some quality time with my good friend Galaga, one of the BEST ARCADE GAMES EVER.

With enough Dr. Pepper, I could make 1 quarter last on Galaga for a long time (a half hour or more). In a crowded arcade that was tough because others would want to play. However, when I could find a lonely machine in some random place – I might play for a couple of hours for a dollar (minus the price of the Dr. Pepper, of course).

Like so many other video games, the way Galaga works is that you progress through successively harder levels. When one gets to a new level it’s like:

“Awesome! I’ve reached level 21!”

It’s NOT like:

“Dude, level 21 is going to be so hard, total bummer, man.”

HOWEVER, sometimes in real life, instead of being totally awesome, new levels can seem like a total bummer, man.

Rather than look at new challenges at work or in relationships or just before a hard workout as awesome, it's easy to be like “oh man, do I have to do this?”

Instead, perhaps the greater opportunity is to think of it as, “oh ya! I’ve reached a new level – where is the Dr. Pepper? Let’s go!”

How are you looking at the new levels in your life?

Cue Galaga music now: du da doo, du da doo, du da doo, dudadadoo...
