Super Serena's Story

High Performance Career Coach Eric Woodard with Serena

As you may know, I've got a pretty big family. They eat food.

Especially as our kids get bigger, they eat more food. Lots of food.

So, I wind up going to the grocery store at least a couple times/week if not more. During the pandemic, I usually try to get there around 6 am so the store is nice and empty. I like to get in and get out.

My ability to power-shop was super-charged a few months ago when a nice person at the self-checkout mentioned that I should use the store's app and scan stuff as I go to be even MORE of grocery store ninja. I tried it, and it was totally awesome. Now I shop even faster. The awesome person who suggested the app is Serena.

Since then, every time I cruise through the self-checkout using that cool new app, I've learned a little bit about Serena. She grew up nearby but when she was 16, moved further out to a farm. Working on the farm she wasn't really feeling high school, so she got her GED.

By the time she was 18 she had already earned her Associates Degree in math.

Not long after she started working for the supermarket chain (a job she loves) while simultaneously working online to earn her bachelor's degree. Since then, over the last 5 years she's been doing that pretty much full-time. Although, depending on where her company needs her she has moved around some, even during the pandemic she's kept at it.

Working on the supermarket front lines during the COVID-19 response, Serena has had to go into quarantine several times after having positive contacts. Fortunately, each time so far she's wound up being ok - and heads back into work.

Serena says, "I love my job. I feel great about serving my community and learning about new jobs while I'm in school. I'm finishing my bachelors in supply chain management and hope to contract for the military or the government in the future."

So, here's the thing. As she advances in her career and maybe even starts talking to some of those military/government contractors in the future, Serena could tell the story of:

Hi I'm Serena. I worked at a grocery store.

OR

Serena could tell the story of:

Hi I'm Serena. I ensured consumers received amazing produce through the work I did to bring farm fresh products to market when I worked on a farm. The opportunity I had to strengthening the food supply chain with farm fresh products was possible because I took initiative in pursuing my diploma and associates degree on my own at the same time. During our nation's COVID-19 response, I've helped ensure public health and safety of consumers and the food supply chain by working full-time on the supermarket front lines.

Now...I don't know Serena super well - so I'm sure she could do better than me by adding more to that in her own words, and she might adjust it depending on her audience.

The point is - just like Serena - I bet you have an AMAZING story to tell. Getting the attention you deserve from prospective employers or schools or whatever often depends on how you tell your story. How are you telling your story?

In any case, I have no doubt that Serena's career is going to continue to fly like a rocket. Not only does her story offer proof about so much she is capable of doing, but it also makes 100% clear that like so many working on the COVID front lines, Serena is an absolute hero.

THANK YOU SERENA!
